What are Bitters?
Bitters have historical use by most cultures in our wide wide world. Bitters are herbal concoctions that harness the bitter-tasting flavonoids in many herbs to stimulate digestion, promote detoxification, and balance the body's metabolic health.
In recent years, a lot of research has begun expanding our understanding of the function of the stomach. Referred to as the “gut brain”, the stomach is responsible for much for than digestion; hormonal regulation, cognition, and mood are all impacted by the digestive process.
Bitter plants work by gently awakening the digestive system, encouraging the production of saliva, stomach acids, and bile, which can aid in the proper breakdown of food and absorption of nutrients. It’s most beneficial to take bitters upon waking to jog the metabolism, or before and after meals as an aperitif or digestif to ease the digestion process.
